How durable water repellent works?

DWR is a thin layer of hydrophobic (water resistant) treatment applied to the surface of functional fabric to repel oil, grease, dirt, and water. It works by increasing the “contact angle” when water comes across the fabric. An effective DWR(durable water repellency) treatment gives water droplets a high contact angle with the fabric, thereby minimizing the surface area of the wetted fabric, allowing the water droplets to roll off.

Durable water repellent isn't permanent.There're many factors that contribute to the weakening of durable water repellency performance. Dirt, sweat, abrasion, body oils, weather exposure and excessive usage all can reduce the effectiveness of durable water repellency over time. Laundering will also accelerate the weakening of durable water repellency if not cared for correctly. There're some methods that can revive durable water repellency.
